WHEN’S THE BEST TIME FOR A GARAGE TEARDOWN?

WHEN’S THE BEST TIME FOR A GARAGE TEARDOWN?

The best time for a Garage Teardown is when your garage’s very existence is starting to defeat its main purpose. When building a new garage is better than fixing it, then it is the best time for a Garage Teardown.

If your garage has structural damage caused by pests, wood rut, rusts, or any other decaying reason, then it’s also high time to tear it down.

It would also be a great time to consider a garage demolition if yours had had been neglected for too long.

Lastly, you should consider a garage teardown when you are selling the house. A dilapidated garage could be an eyesore and may not be worth the potential that your listing swears it has.

GARAGE TEARDOWN PROCESS

There are six main steps to Garage Teardown. These steps apply  when you will be converting the garage to living space:

  1. Pull appropriate building permits for your project.
  2. Shut off all water, electricity, and gas to the house.
  3. Remove trim work (i.e., baseboards, window, and door trim).
  4. Tear down unneeded existing drywall. You can leave up drywall that you will still use once the space is remodeled.
  5. Remove the garage door(s).
  6. Pull out any windows that need to be repositioned or closed off.

If you are removing the garage altogether, you will need to remove the roofing materials after all the water, gas, and electricity have been shut off.

After having completed all these steps, then you can finally have a bigger and wider space! You may proceed to designing and building a new one, or use the space for any purpose that you like.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DEBRIS AFTER A GARAGE TEARDOWN?

As fulfilling as it may sound to go smash and remove all those garage parts, demolition is messy and complicated. You need to take care of that debris. After the job is done, the old garage needs to go somewhere else.

You may want to consider hiring a debris disposal company to take care of all those debris. But take note that some parts may still be decent, like the roof or plywood sheathing. Keep the reusable parts and save them for your future projects.
